Wolves and Wild Horses Ride – Portugal
Ride Description:
On our horse riding holiday in Portugal we enter wolf territory on this exciting horse riding holiday in Geres, North Portugal. In the hills and mountains of Geres National Park, some 70,000 hectares of designated protected parkland in the north of Portugal. The region is relatively undiscovered and, although there is some tourism the area remains unspoilt. This is the domain of the wolf and, although it is extremely rare to see one, there is every chance that you will hear one howling during your 8 day riding holiday.
You will be collected from Porto airport and transfer to Castro Laboreiro (Approximately 2 hours). Depending on your arrival time we will spend the first day getting acquainted with out location, the horses and our accommodation. Because of the nature of this ride there are no structured itineraries and we will discuss the options between ourselves and decide the route. We will of course, weather dependent, aim for picnic lunches where we can relax, take a swim and explore the area on foot. It can get quite hot during the afternoon so we will decide whether to ride further or just relax for a couple of hours until the weather starts to cool a little
Geres is also the domain of the wild Garrano horses. Herds of Gerrano can still be seen in this region of Portugal and you will have the opportunity of seeing and possibly even getting into the herds.

- Day 1 Transfer from international airport of Porto city
- Day 2 9:00 – Meet the horses and riding in the mountain until noon
12:30 – Lunch
14:00 – Visit the exhibition in National Park office to know more about the region
16:30 – Small walking trail to medieval Castle of Castro Laboreiro - Day 3 9:00 – Riding to south-west part of the plateau of Castro Laboreiro. We will cross a small village called Rodeiro and ride up until the top. Lunch in the mountain and observation of wild mountain horses is possible.
- Day 4 9:00 – Riding to the mountain until noon
12:30 – Lunch
14:00 – Walking trail along Laboreiro river to natural pools where we go to swim
21:30 – The wolf howl night
- Day 5 9:00 – Riding to south-east part of the Mountain where we can visit the biggest megalithic necropolis of Iberian Peninsula. Observation of wild mountain horses and birds of prey. We are in the wolf territory and we can know more about this mythical predator.
- Day 6 9:00 – Riding to the mountain until noon
12:30 – Lunch
14:00 – Bicycle ride (soft ride in the interior roads) to lower village of Ribeiro de Baixo and swim in the river
- Day 7 9:00 – Ride to the high mountain in to the ghost Valley. A very beautiful valley where oak trees and birch trees give protection and shelter to a variety of plants and animals
- Day 8 Transfer to international airport of Porto city
What’s Included…
7 nights accommodation with breakfeast, 6 days riding. All the lunches are included. All the dinners are excluded from this price (Budget around 10 Euro for dinner with wine).
